DDS has pioneered and developed polyaphron science for use as the basis of drug delivery vehicles. Polyaphrons are oil-in-water or water-in-oil dispersions of colloidal dimensions that have properties related to, but significantly different from conventional emulsions.
In particular, they are capable of existing in extremely stable forms in which the internal phase occupies 90% or more of the total volume and stabilized by only 1% surfactant. This combination of high internal phase concentration and great stability gives rise to a number of DDS’s novel and unique technologies, including ATD, TFE and SDD. Polyaphron dispersions can also be used to provide pre-dispersed solutions of oil-soluble drugs in capsule form. Individual droplets in a Polyaphron Dispersion are called ‘aphrons’.
